The soldier looked concerned enough for Leon to believe that he would receive help. He helped Leon up and propped him against a wall. “I’m going to need to take a look at this,” said the soldier with obvious discomfort. Leon let the offices inspect his side and was almost instantly greeted by pain. “The bullet is still in there so I need to get it out. This could get messy.” The soldier handed Leon a scrap of cloth and said, “bite down on this.” Leon put the cloth in his mouth and as if he had been shot again, a surge of pain went through his side. The pain endured as if it were wriggling through his flesh. With a sharp jerk the young soldier yanked the remnants of the bullet out of Leon. Leon had his his breaking point, and with a short weeze fell to the ground, passed out. He awoke without knowing how long he had been out, or where he was. A woman quickly rushed to him from another rom in the house they were in. “Shh, it’s alright. We just needed to take you in to sew your wound and give you somewhere to sleep.” At this moment the same young soldier opens a door and walks into the house. “Hello, I’m sorry I couldn’t speak that much earlier, I’m Olaf. This is my wife Rosa. We just wanted to help someone out in this unfortunate situation.” Leon, a little bit dazed replied, “What happened to the blockade? Is it still up?” With disappointment Olaf looked at the ground and answered, “
The East Berlin leaders decided to put up a wall, but I to work, being a soldier. The blockade is gone now, but it has been replaced by a wall with constant watchmen. All I can do is help the people that aren’t killed trying to cross the wall. You are welcome to stay with us until you are able to travel to the other side.” Leon contemplated his options and saw only one reality where he would have safety and security. “Thank you very much Olaf, I would live to stay with you. I am so grateful for your help, even though we are complete strangers.” Leon lived with Olaf for the rest of his time in East Berlin. The walls were finally taken down and people could pass freely in berlin on november 9th in 1889. Leon went to his house, packed his belongings, and was never seen in Berlin again.
